The new administrative capital witnessed the finals of the second season of the " Locally-Made Electric Cars Rally ", a competition launched by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology last year.
The rally ended with the victory of the Higher Institute of Technology team in the tenth of Ramadan with the grand prize of 500,000 Egyptian pounds after a strong competition involving 15 Egyptian teams.
The Russian University team came in second place with a prize value of 250 thousand pounds. This is in addition to the prizes offered by Shell Helix, which are 3 awards in Entrepreneurship with a total value of LE 50,000, which was received by Mansoura and Nile University team and Zewail City team.
An award was presented regarding road safety standards which was won by the British University in addition to a two-week scholarship for hands-on training in a company which was won by Ain Shams University.
The Excellence Award as the best spirit in teamwork was won by The South Valley University team, and the Excellence Award for the first time participation in the competition was obtained by Mansoura University team.
This competition is part of an initiative launched by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar on 18 May 2017, and was invented by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, headed by Dr. Mahmoud Sakr and organized by the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University.
The first season of the rally was implemented in 2018 and included 9 teams from Egyptian universities, a national technology competition and the first of its kind in Egypt and the region and legally protected for the Academy of Scientific Research.
The President of the Academy of Scientific Research said in a statement that the executive plan of the Academy 2018/2022 paid great attention to technological and industrial alliances with a view to transfer and localization of technology and deepen local manufacturing and the accumulation of national scattered capabilities at home and abroad.
The rally this year focused on the automotive industry and digital industry, where the past several years include several industries such as medicine, petrochemicals, water desalination, new and renewable energy and spare parts manufacturing.
Sakr added that the Cairo Rally for Local Cars is one of the programs of a huge project adopted by the Ministry of Higher Education represented in the academy in the field of electric cars industry. The automotive industry and the total initial funding allocated to this program is LE 37 million.
The program aims through innovative mechanisms such as rally and design competition and manufacturing of electric cars homemade rehabilitation of a team of researchers and scientists in this area and increase the proportion of local component in partnership with the relevant ministries.
It also include the preparation of engineering cadres and attract the best elements to enter this field and put Egypt on the international map to participate in international competitions through an institutional system supported by the state.
This will help to increase the confidence of international companies to invest in this field in Egypt, enter into partnerships; in addition to the rehabilitation of technical workers, engineers, researchers and designers in the fields of embedded software and mechanical parts and Electrical systems.
Dr. Maged Ghoneima, the principal researcher of the project and supervisor of the Innovation Complex in Ain Shams Engineering, explained that Ain Shams University is in charge of the technical and organizational supervision of the competition; it is one of the steps that started with an initiative to finally reach the complete manufacturing of an Egyptian electric car according to the plan of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research represented by The Academy of Scientific Research.
He explained that 31 teams from different universities have received technical training through the technical academy set up by Ain Shams University specially for the rally during March and April on how to design the car and stages of manufacturing; 22 of them submitted design reports M their own, the top five were evaluated ten to qualify for the selection phase of the process manufactures the car.

Engineer Ali Hosni, the project's president, explained that this year's competition was different in terms of organization and details, and there has also been a noticeable development. He revealed that 15 cars manufactured entirely by Egypt are competing.
Hosni stressed that this initiative aims to prepare and teach students how to design and manufacture an electric car and race it in a simulation of the car manufacturing market in the world.
