Tensions are mounting in Türkiye, which is less than a week away from holding presidential and parliamentary elections, as incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized his main rival, while the opposition has reported campaign attacks.

Speaking to his campaign's largest rally ahead of the May 14 elections, Erdogan described opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as "drunk".

Addressing hundreds of thousands of his supporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said that Kilicdaroglu could drink as much as he wanted and that the people would not abandon the country to an "alcoholic".

The Turkish president again accused his rival of working with "terrorists".

Erdogan estimated the number of participants in his electoral rally in Istanbul at about 1.7 million people. On the other hand, Kilicdaroglu also appeared at a major event in front of many supporters in Istanbul on Saturday but there was no official estimate of the number of participants.
