The long-time escalations between Greece and Turkey over their maritime borders, including the Aegean Sea, saw new development, Sky News Arabia reported on Wednesday.

The new development in the tensions between the two neighboring countries started with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu requesting Greece's withdrawal from the Aegean Islands.

Cavusoglu: “The agreements are there but Greece is violating them. It’s arming them. If Greece does not stop this violation, the sovereignty of the islands will be brought up for discussion,” adding: “It’s that clear. You will abide by the agreements.”

On the other hand, Greece reflected that it has the legal right to defend its lands against any violations or actions done by Ankara.

In the same context, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis affirmed that restraint is the most thing needed now in the light of the war in Ukraine.

The Greek Prime Minister commented on the violations between Turkey and Greece regarding the exploration of gas in the sea, saying: “I think we are still very far from that point, far from the tension we had in the summer of 2020."

He added: “Today, everyone needs to show restraint. Especially at a time when we are facing a very big challenge at NATO with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We must be united."

However, Cavusoglu revealed that Turkey sent two letters to the UN regarding the militarized islands and he called on Greece to respond to the letters.

The minister underscored: “They are getting aggressive because they cannot respond to the letters."
