Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif was knocked out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after losing to Sweden's Rebecca Petersonin the first round.
The world number 117 lost 2-0 as she failed to qualify for the second round. Petersonin won the first set with 7-5, and the second one with 7-6.
On June 24, Sherif was knocked out of the Wimbledon Grand Slam after losing to Germany’s Jule Niemeier in the second qualifying round.
Sherif burst onto the scene in 2020 after becoming the first Egyptian to qualify for the main draw of Roland Garros. The world number 117 had reached the first round before losing to Karolina Piskova.
In January 2021 then became the first Egyptian woman to compete in the Australian Open main draw after beating Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic in the qualifiers.
