The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) announced that some telecom services in Greater Cairo will experience temporary disruptions for up to three hours early Thursday morning, due to critical infrastructure work linked to the ongoing development of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.

The disruption, scheduled to occur between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM on Thursday, October 2, will result from the rerouting of major fiber optic cables forming part of Egypt’s national transmission backbone, managed by Telecom Egypt.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the NTRA clarified that the fiber cable rerouting is necessary to accommodate civil works in the Pyramids area as part of the final construction phase of the Grand Egyptian Museum, a national flagship project.

The cables being relocated are part of Telecom Egypt’s core transmission infrastructure, which also serves as a shared backbone for all major mobile and internet service providers.

“Some mobile and fixed internet services may be temporarily affected in areas surrounding Greater Cairo between 3 AM and 6 AM,” the regulator said, noting that the impact is expected to be localized but may include intermittent disruptions in both voice and data services.

The NTRA emphasized it is closely monitoring the maintenance and transfer operations in real time, in cooperation with Telecom Egypt and the affected mobile operators.

“Field teams will be on standby to ensure services are restored immediately upon completion of the fiber rerouting,” the regulator stated, adding that it “apologizes to users for any inconvenience caused during the operation.”

This planned maintenance underscores the complex coordination required to modernize Egypt’s telecom infrastructure while preserving service continuity, especially in high-density urban zones like Cairo.
