Tehran Suspends Schools, Sports Activities Due to Pollution

After air pollution in the Iranian capital Tehran reached record levels, authorities, on Saturday, announced a suspension of schools and universities and postponed sports competitions in the city.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that this decision was announced by Tehran’s deputy governor Mohammad Taghizadeh.

Taghizadeh urged Tehran's citizens not to go outside, and if necessary, he advised them to take public transport.

He also decided to ban the entry of trucks and heavy vehicles to Tehran, on this day.

Meanwhile, the head of the Tehran Emergency Center said that the air quality index in most parts of Tehran is unhealthy.

In this regard, the concerned authorities announced that air pollution in Tehran exceeded 158 micrograms / cubic meter during the past 24 hours.

Inadequate physical infrastructure for air recycling, population density, exhaust gases from old cars and millions of motorcycles are among the factors that increase the rate of air pollution in Tehran.

Noteworthy, Tehran is ranked among the 12 most polluted cities in the world.

Earlier, a new study revealed that Long-term exposure to air pollution is like smoking about a pack of cigarettes a day for many years; hence, air pollution may be as harmful to your lungs as smoking.
