Amid worldwide condemnation, Tehran has announced on Thursday the resumption of uranium enrichment at its underground Fordow nuclear facility on Thursday, the atomic energy agency of Iran said in an official statement.
“In the early minutes of Thursday, uranium gas was pumped into centrifuges at Fordow facilities, about 180 kilometers south,” the statement read.
The whole process has been supervised by the inspectors of (the) U.N. nuclear watchdog, according to the statement.
On Tuesday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani announced that Tehran will begin injecting uranium gas into 1,044 centrifuges, as a firm step away from its atomic deal with world powers since US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal over a year ago.
Experts described Iran’s announcement as a major tear to the unraveling deal.
It is worth mentioning that, the United States accused Iran of “nuclear extortion” and pledged no let-up in pressure after the Iranian regime declared the resumption of uranium enrichment at the key Fordo plant.
The US State Department spokesperson said, "Iran has no credible reason to expand its uranium enrichment program, at the Fordo facility or elsewhere, other than a clear attempt at nuclear extortion that will only deepen its political and economic isolation,”
