Tarek Rahman, the newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, took the constitutional oath of office today, alongside the members of his party, before the national parliament.
Rahman is set to succeed the interim government that led the country of 170 million people for the past 18 months.
The parliamentary oath-taking ceremony was overseen by A M M Nasir Uddin, the head of the Election Commission, with members pledging allegiance to Bangladesh.
Later today, Rahman and his cabinet are scheduled to take their official oaths before President Mohammed Shahabuddin, formalizing the start of their government.
At 60 years old, Tarek Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh National Party and scion of one of the country’s most influential political families, secured a landslide victory in elections held just five days ago.
In his victory speech, he said, "This victory belongs to Bangladesh and to democracy," adding, "It is a triumph for the people who have fought and sacrificed for democratic values."
He also acknowledged the challenges ahead, including addressing the economic crises affecting the nation.
Rahman pledged to restore stability and revive growth after months of political disruption that had shaken investor confidence in the world’s second-largest garment exporter.
He called on all political parties to remain united in a country long divided by fierce competition.
