The Taliban announced that it has received a $10 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to support efforts in combating climate change in Afghanistan.

According to Rohullah Ameen, head of the Climate Change Department in the Taliban’s National Environmental Protection Agency, the funds will be allocated to a five-year project aimed at addressing climate-related challenges in the provinces of Kunar and Badakhshan.

The project is set to focus on improving local communities and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for residents in these areas.

Additionally, it will implement various initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and tackle the impacts of climate change that have been severely affecting the country in recent years.

This marks the first international climate funding that Afghanistan has received since the Taliban took control in 2021.

Experts believe that the project could help mitigate environmental degradation and support rural communities that heavily rely on agriculture and natural resources.

However, the move has sparked criticism from human rights groups and international organizations, questioning how the Taliban will manage the funds and whether the local population will truly benefit from the project.

Afghanistan is considered one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to rising temperatures, water scarcity, and frequent natural disasters.

The Taliban's climate initiative aims to address these challenges while supporting local communities in adapting to changing environmental conditions.
