Taiwan's health authorities have confirmed the first known death from the mpox virus on the island, as a man in his 30s succumbed to the disease.

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control revealed that the patient displayed symptoms related to mpox in August and sought medical treatment the following month, leading to a diagnosis of both mpox and HIV.

Tragically, the patient was unvaccinated against mpox and passed away on November 1 despite medical intervention.

The disease, previously known as monkeypox, typically manifests with symptoms such as high fever and rashes, with severe cases lasting for two to four weeks.

Over the past year, Taiwan has reported a total of 355 mpox cases, including both local and international transmissions, according to the disease control agency.

The Western Pacific and Southeast Asia regions have witnessed a significant surge in mpox infections since July this year, highlighting the global concern surrounding this virus.
