The Syrian Civil Defense stated, in a statement, that 22 people were killed due to an outbreak of cholera, in the northwest of the country, after the earthquake that also struck Turkey.
The Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, said that there are 568 infected with cholera as a result of the destruction of infrastructure, water, and sewage lines after the earthquake.
The White Helmets are the main relief organization in the border area worst affected by the earthquake in Syria
Meanwhile, Muhammad al-Hawari, the regional spokesman for the United Nations Children Fund ( UNICEF), said that the children who were affected by the loss of their homes in the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, or the circumstances of their families, the lack of access to safe water and the risks they face due to cholera and anemia, amount to about 8 million children.
He added, during an intervention on the “Cairo News” space channel, that “the number in northern Syria is approximately two million and 500 thousand, and in southern Turkyie it exceeds 4 and a half million, so the total may be close to 8 million children at this moment.”
And he continued, "The Secretary-General of the United Nations approved an umbrella response of approximately $400 million, which includes health and basic foodstuffs, and education also need to rehabilitate schools to reopen them."
