The Syrian army said on Monday that air defenses had intercepted an Israeli aggression against the capital Damascus, in an intense bombardment of Iranian targets inside the country since the beginning of the year.

An army statement said that Israeli military aircraft flew over the Golan Heights to strike targets on the outskirts of the capital, adding that the Syrian defenses drowned most of the missiles.

The Syrian army said in a statement: "our air defenses continue to repel Israeli missile attacks in the sky of the capital."

"The strikes targeted a large military pision in the town of Kiswa, 14 km south of Damascus, in an Iranian-backed factions controlled area," A Syrian army defector said.

Residents said that eyewitnesses heard loud explosions on the southern edge of Damascus, an area where Iranian-backed militias are fortified.

Meantime, Israeli military officials acknowledged the escalation of attacks inside Syria aimed at ending the entrenched Iranian military presence in Syria.

The IDF Chief of Staff, Aviv Kochavi said last year that his country's missile strikes had “slowed the presence of Iran in Syria,” hitting more than 500 targets only in 2020.
