Syria and Ukraine have formally resumed diplomatic relations after years of suspension, following the signing of a joint declaration in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The agreement was signed by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha.
The announcement came after a high-level meeting between Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Zelensky welcomed the agreement, describing it as an important step towards fostering mutual stability.
Writing on the social platform X, he said that discussions with President al-Sharaa covered promising areas of cooperation, shared security challenges, and the commitment to building relations based on mutual respect and trust.
