Several people were killed and injured in a missile attack launched by terrorist organizations, targeting a mass gathering in Al-Suqaylabiyah city, in Hama governorate, the Syrian news agency, SANA reported.

The news agency said that the missile attack killed two people and injured 11 others, as the terrorist organizations fired at a mass gathering in the city of Suqaylabiyah during a religious ceremony marking the opening of the Aya Sophia Church in the city.

Sunday’s attack came two days after shelling killed seven people including four children in the rebel-held Idlib region.

The Observatory said Friday’s fatalities in the Jisr Al-Shughur countryside of northern Syria were caused by Russian air strikes.

Around half of Idlib province as well as parts of Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia provinces are controlled by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, the former franchise in Syria of Al-Qaeda.

Other rebel groups in the last enclave of the armed opposition to the Damascus regime also remain active, with varying degrees of Turkish support.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey brokered a truce in Idlib and neighboring areas that remains in place, despite sporadic attacks from both sides, including Russian airstrikes.

The war in Syria began in 2011, killing nearly half a million people and forcing about half of the country's pre-war population to leave their homes.
