Switzerland has closed its embassy in Tehran due to rising security risks, authorities announced Wednesday, amid escalating regional tensions.
The Swiss government confirmed that the ambassador and five staff members left Iran by land and are now safely outside the country. Officials said the diplomatic mission will reopen once the security situation allows.
According to the government, Switzerland will continue to maintain communication channels between the US and Iran in coordination with the relevant parties.
Switzerland has long acted as the protecting power for the US in Iran, representing American interests since diplomatic relations between US and Iran were severed. In this role, Swiss diplomats relay messages between the two governments and assist US citizens when necessary.
A statement from the US Embassy in Bern said Washington respects the decision of the Swiss government and expressed gratitude for the dedication of embassy staff, whose work remains essential to protecting US interests and supporting American citizens.
The Swiss embassy previously employed six Swiss staff members and 18 local employees. Four Swiss citizens had already left Iran earlier this month as security concerns intensified.
