Sweden announced Thursday a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 12.9 billion Swedish kronor, nearly $1.4 billion, with a primary focus on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson said the package marks the third largest military assistance package Sweden has provided to Ukraine since 2022. He noted that the support is based on Kyiv’s expressed needs, particularly air defense systems and the maintenance of previously delivered platforms through additional ammunition supplies.

According to the Swedish government, around 4.3 billion kronor will be allocated to advanced short range air defense systems. Part of the funding will be used to deliver additional units of the mobile anti-aircraft artillery system Tridon Mk2, which Sweden announced earlier this year it would supply to Ukraine.

Jonson said the goal is to deliver these systems within 24 months. The remaining funds will finance large quantities of ammunition, including long range artillery shells, as well as training programs and expanded cooperation with Ukraine on long range drone capabilities.

The new package is part of Sweden’s annual 40 billion kronor budget dedicated to supporting Ukraine. Jonson indicated that the remaining 27 billion kronor allocated for this year will be announced during the spring and summer.

With this latest package, the 21st military aid tranche provided by Sweden since the conflict escalated in 2022, Stockholm’s total military assistance to Ukraine has reached 103 billion kronor.
