The Swedish government has announced a historic decision to stop using the term "Islamophobia" in its official discourse, deeming the expression "problematic" and failing to accurately describe issues of discrimination or hatred related to Muslims.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmälje Steinergaard stated at a recent press conference that the term suggests "irrational individual fears," which can hinder a true understanding of problems related to religious and racial discrimination.
The Spanish newspaper Perción quoted the Swedish Foreign Minister as saying that the government prefers to use more precise expressions when discussing crimes or violations against Muslims, noting that the term "Islamophobia" has been exploited by terrorist groups to shield themselves from political and intellectual criticism.
