Sweden’s Foreign Ministry announced today that Stockholm has allocated 500 million Swedish krona ($49 million) to secure energy supplies in Ukraine.

This significant investment is aimed at ensuring reliable heat and electricity in the war-torn country.

According to a statement on the Swedish government’s official website, the funds will initially be used to supply two gas turbines to generate electricity.

These turbines are part of a broader effort to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has been severely impacted by ongoing conflicts.

The foreign ministry cited World Bank estimates, stating that this financial support would help provide electricity to about 185,000 people.

This makes it one of Sweden's largest contributions to Ukraine's energy sector to date.

In June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at a forum in Berlin, highlighting that 9 gigawatts of the country's energy generation capacity had been destroyed, accounting for 80% of thermal power generation and one-third of hydroelectric power.

The destruction has led to widespread power shortages and has significantly strained Ukraine’s energy grid.

Earlier, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko revealed that Ukraine had lost half of its electricity generation capacity.

He warned that the country’s remaining capacity would not be sufficient to sustain the population through the harsh winter months, adding that imported electricity would not be enough to cover the shortfall.
