A shooting incident in Omaha, Nebraska, left a suspect dead and three police officers injured, authorities reported.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said the suspect, a man in his twenties, had earlier shot a 61-year-old man inside a local grocery store around midday, striking him multiple times in the chest. The condition of the initial victim has not yet been confirmed.

Officers obtained the suspect’s vehicle plate from the crime scene and tracked him to a nearby gas station. Schmaderer stated that the suspect exited his car, entered a restroom, then emerged and opened fire on police officers.

Two officers were directly hit, while a third sustained shrapnel injuries. Police returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.

Schmaderer described the day as “extremely dangerous for the city of Omaha due to this suspect.”

The two wounded officers were transported to a local hospital, where their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The third officer, treated for shrapnel wounds, has been released.
