Texas state broke its own records for early voter turnout on Tuesday, the first day of in-person voting, jamming early-voting polling places ahead of a November 3 election showdown between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden.
According to the State’s Office Secretary in Travis County, there were 16.9 million Texans registered to vote, up 300,000 from three weeks ago and up 1.8 million since October 2016, , which includes Austin, 97% of estimated eligible voters are now registered, according to the voter registrar.
Both Texas and Georgia are normally Republican-leaning but have emerged as competitive states in the presidential race this year as Biden holds a steady lead in national opinion polls over Trump and expands his campaign into new territory, according to News reportes.
Also, Trump won Georgia by 5 % points in 2016 and Texas by 9 points, but opinion polls show Biden running close in Georgia and slightly trailing Trump in Texas.
On other hand, Trump sought to shore up support in Iowa, holding a rally in a state he won comfortably four years ago, while Vice President Pence campaigned in Michigan, another Midwestern battleground state that was key to the Republican ticket’s electoral college win in 2016.
Also, Biden announced on Twitter that his campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised $383 million in September, a massive sum that leaves him flush with cash in the final weeks before the election. The amount raised in one month beat the Democrats’ record-shattering haul in August of $364.5 million, according to WSJ.
