The strength of a passport has increasingly become an unofficial indicator of a country’s global influence, diplomatic reach, and economic openness, and according to the 2026 Henley Passport Index, Singapore has once again secured the title of the world’s most powerful passport.

Holders of Singaporean passports can now access 192 destinations worldwide either visa-free or through visa-on-arrival arrangements, reinforcing the city-state’s position at the top of global mobility rankings.

The United Arab Emirates ranked second globally alongside Japan and South Korea, with Emirati passport holders able to enter 187 destinations without obtaining a prior visa, cementing the UAE’s status as the strongest passport in the Arab world and one of the most influential travel documents internationally.

Analysts say the UAE’s rapid rise in global passport rankings reflects a broader transformation in the country’s economic and diplomatic positioning over the past decade.

The Gulf state has aggressively expanded international partnerships, strengthened tourism and investment ties, and pursued policies focused on economic openness and attracting global talent and capital.

The strong performance of the Emirati passport also coincides with the country’s push to position itself as a global hub for business, technology, and high-net-worth individuals.

Europe

European countries continued to dominate much of the top tier in the rankings.

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Norway all ranked among countries whose citizens enjoy access to around 185 destinations worldwide.

Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Austria also maintained high mobility scores, reflecting a broader link between domestic stability, strong institutions, and international diplomatic influence.

The United Kingdom, once a long-standing leader in the rankings, now trails some of its European and Asian counterparts, offering visa-free access to 183 destinations.

United States

The United States ranked relatively lower compared with several European and Asian nations, with American passport holders able to access 179 destinations visa-free or via simplified entry procedures.

Observers attribute the relative decline partly to shifting geopolitical dynamics and increasingly restrictive immigration and visa policies introduced in recent years.

Afghanistan

At the opposite end of the index, Afghanistan retained its position as the world’s weakest passport in 2026, granting access to just 23 countries without a prior visa.

Pakistan, Somalia, North Korea, Bangladesh, and Iran also ranked among the least mobile passports globally, highlighting the impact of prolonged political instability, economic crises, and geopolitical isolation on international travel freedom.

UAE

Beyond passport rankings, residency in the UAE itself has become increasingly valuable for expatriates and foreign professionals.

Residents of the UAE now benefit from easier access to a growing number of destinations through visa-on-arrival programs and electronic travel authorizations.

Popular destinations offering simplified entry for UAE residents include Thailand, Kenya, Mauritius, Georgia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Azerbaijan, Oman, Seychelles, Indonesia, Armenia, and Uzbekistan.

The trend reflects the rapid growth of outbound travel from the UAE, particularly demand for short-haul leisure trips and hassle-free tourism experiences.

The rise of the Emirati passport has also coincided with the expansion of long-term residency programs, most notably the UAE’s Golden Visa initiative.

The program has become one of the country’s primary tools for attracting investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and creative talent.

The Golden Visa offers residency for up to 10 years, family sponsorship benefits, and greater flexibility for work and investment, alongside easier access to education and healthcare services.

Eligible categories include entrepreneurs, scientists, doctors, engineers, athletes, content creators, investors, and specialized professionals, in addition to property investors holding assets exceeding two million dirhams.

Authorities have recently broadened eligibility criteria further to include teachers, nurses, and individuals recognized for exceptional social contributions.
