The Sundance Film Festival unveiled Tuesday its selection of 72 films from 29 countries for its 2021 event, which will be held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

About 47% of the feature films in the lineup are directed by one or more women, which includes Robin Wright's directorial debut, "Land" in which she also stars, and "Passing," directed by Rebecca Hall and starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson.

In a press release, Sundance Institute Founder and President Robert Redford said: "Togetherness has been an animating principle here at the Sundance Institute as we've worked to reimagine the Festival for 2021 because there is no Sundance without our community,".

Other projects with notable names include Questlove's documentary, "Summer of Soul," and "Prisoners of the Ghostland," with Nicholas Cage.

The upcoming edition will unspool via Sundance’s new proprietary streaming platform from January 28 to February 3, featuring seven days of premieres, events, artist talks, and cutting-edge XR exhibitions.

Sundance will also be partnering with independent cinema communities across the U.S. and beyond to safely host in-person events.

Even though the lineup is smaller, Sundance estimates that 3,500 features were submitted this year.
