The Cairo Opera House witnessed a night of brilliance and cultural harmony as it hosted a gala concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Egypt.
The evening marked the long-awaited Egyptian debut of world-renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo, whose radiant voice and graceful stage presence enthralled the audience. She performed alongside two of Egypt’s leading classical singers, Bass Reda El-Wakil and Tenor Amr Medhat, accompanied by the Cairo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Ahmed El-Saedi.
The program was a rich and diverse journey through classical masterpieces and cultural treasures, featuring works such as Festive Overture, La Fille du Régiment, the moving Arirang Rhapsody, and the timeless Casta Diva. Blending universal classics with elements of Korean heritage, the concert created a spirit of unity and celebration.
Organized by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and Cairo Opera House, the event was hosted by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Distinguished guests included Ambassador Omar Selim, Advisor to Egypt’s Minister of Culture, senior government officials, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kim Yonghyon of Korea expressed his pride in the occasion, saying: “Without the establishment of diplomatic ties between our two nations, such a remarkable occasion would not have been possible.” Ambassador Omar Selim emphasized that the event symbolized not only shared history but also a commitment to a stronger future of cooperation.
Sumi Jo herself spoke with admiration for Egypt, noting that each visit made her feel at home in a country of extraordinary heritage and vibrant culture. She expressed her joy in performing with Egyptian musicians and her hope to return again soon.
Maestro El-Saedi highlighted the evening as proof that music can bridge cultures, strengthening understanding and friendship between nations.
The concert added yet another milestone to Sumi Jo’s illustrious career, which has taken her to the world’s greatest opera houses — including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Milan’s La Scala, Vienna State Opera, London’s Covent Garden, and the Paris Opera. A Grammy Award winner, she was also recently honored with France’s highest cultural order, the Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
This gala was part of a wider program celebrating three decades of Korea–Egypt relations, with upcoming highlights including an economic seminar, Korea’s National Day celebrations in October, and the Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship — continuing the spirit of cultural exchange and partnership.
