US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stressed the US's strict commitment to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "NATO", which is to defend any member state of the alliance if it is attacked.

This came during a phone call between Sullivan and counterparts of Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), to discuss the issue of European security in light of the Russian attack on Ukraine, according to a statement issued by the White House.

Moreover, they discussed efforts to enhance collective defense and security, in addition to arrangements for holding the NATO summit in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on June 29-30.

Two days ago, US National Security Adviser, renewed the United States’ support for Sweden and Finland to join NATO.

On the other hand, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Trace said, last week, that Sweden and Finland should join NATO “as soon as possible”. And she stressed that their accession will enhance common security for Europe.

“The UK strongly supports Finland’s and Sweden’s applications to join NATO,” Truss said. They must join the alliance as soon as possible, as their accession will enhance the common security of Europe,” Trace said in a statement.

She also stated that the UK “looks forward to working with them as new members of NATO, and is ready to provide them with its full assistance during the accession process.”
