The Suez Canal Authority announced the transit of the giant container ship CMA CGM Grand Palais on its first voyage through the canal.

The vessel, operated by CMA CGM, is among the largest container ships in the world powered by liquefied natural gas. It sailed within the southbound convoy after passing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, coming from Singapore and heading to Malta.

The ship is about 400 meters long and 61 meters wide, with a capacity of 23,876 TEUs and a total tonnage of around 240,000 tons. It operates on a route connecting ports in the Far East with the Mediterranean.

Chairman Osama Rabie said the transit reflects the canal’s ability to accommodate modern large-scale vessels and its importance as a major global shipping route that reduces travel distance and fuel use.

He added that cooperation with CMA CGM remains ongoing, with the company continuing to use the canal as a main route.

The ship’s captain said recent upgrades to the canal have improved navigation and safety for large vessels, noting the efficiency and experience of the canal’s pilots.
