Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority confirmed that the project of developing the navigational course of the authority aims to duplicate the size of canal from 122km until 132km.

He pointed out that this distance will be added to the new Suez Canal to become 82 km in length instead of 72 km, in addition to expanding and deepening the southern area of the canal from 132Km to 162Km.

Rabie explained, in a call-in with "Extra News" channel on Saturday, that this distance will be added to the new Suez Canal to become 82 km in length instead of 72 km, in addition to expanding and deepening the southern area of the Suez Canal from 132 km until 162 km, according to the Middle East News Agency (MENA).

Rabie added that this will increase the number of ships inside the canal to 6, and reduce the transit time in both directions.

He indicated that work in the small bitter lakes will not affect the movement of navigation. "The movement of vessels and ships will be regular, and ships will pass on time," he affirmed, noting that there has been a recovery in global trade movement since the beginning of this year.

He stated, "The number of ships and cargo has increased, and we are achieving great numbers so far and much better than last year."

He explained that the depth of the canal is currently 66 feet, adding there is an expansion of about 40 meters towards the east, with an addition of 6 feet in depth to reach 72 feet, indicating that the development project will improve the navigation process inside the Suez Canal.

He pointed out, that the expansion will be completed within 24 months, and the existing fleet of dredgers will allow the implementation of the project, saying: "If we need to use external dredges, We will do."
