On Monday, senior Sudanese officials welcomed a move to remove Khartoum from the US list of countries supporting terrorism.

Sudanese Prime Minister in the transitional government Abdalla Hamdok said on Twitter: “Today, after more than two decades, it was announced that our beloved country has come out of the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. We are freed from the international and global blockade in which the behavior of the ousted regime has forced us.”

Hamdok added: "Today we return with all our history, the civilization of our people, the greatness of our country and the vigor of our revolution to the international community as a peace-loving country, and a force supporting regional and international stability."

Sudanese Head of Transitional Military Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan also commented on the event and tweeted on his account saying: “Greetings and congratulations to the Sudanese people on the occasion of Sudan's exit from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism. This great work is the product of the effort made by the people of my country and it was done in the same spirit complementarity to the masses of the popular and official December revolution, thanks to the ministerial and diplomatic working groups.

He thanked the Arab countries and the regional and international partners who supported Sudan, praising the decision of the United States.

On his part, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy head of the Sudanese Transitional Military Council said in a tweet on his official account on Twitter: “After 27 years of placing our country on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, today we congratulate our people for leaving this list that has damaged our economy and foreign relations and prevented benefit from international institutions."

Early today, the US embassy in Sudan announced Monday that the decision to cancel Sudan’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism will take effect today.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the embassy said: “The 45-day congressional notification period has expired. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed a notice stating that the cancellation of Sudan’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism is effective as of December 14, to be published in the Federal Register.”

Last October, the US House of Representatives received a notification from the administration of outgoing President Donald Trump to remove Khartoum from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Washington took the decision to put Sudan on the list, during Omar Al-Bashir’s rule, after it accused him of harboring local and international terrorists, including the former leader of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden.

However, this year, the White House announced Trump’s intention to inform Congress of removing Khartoum from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Khartoum decided to pay $ 335 million to a suspended fund to compensate the families of victims of terrorism.

While Trump urged Congress to pass legislation to activate the removal of Khartoum from the list.
