Sudan’s military leadership is studying a new ceasefire proposal backed by the United States and Saudi Arabia, amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the country’s three-year conflict.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold meetings today to discuss the proposed truce, which calls for an immediate halt to fighting. The proposal is also intended to pave the way for broader discussions on implementing a lasting ceasefire and launching a comprehensive peace process.

The initiative has attracted wide attention inside Sudan, where citizens and officials are awaiting the outcome amid ongoing violence, particularly in western regions.

Fighting continues in Darfur and Kordofan, forcing new waves of displacement and worsening the humanitarian crisis.

As political and diplomatic activity intensifies, many Sudanese remain hopeful that the new proposal could bring a long-awaited end to the conflict.
