Sudan's Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in regional conflicts. Speaking during a high-level session on Sunday, May 10, 2026, the envoy emphasized that the proliferation of drone technology is no longer a localized issue but a direct threat to the collective national security of the Arab world.
The representative highlighted that these "suicide drones" and surveillance systems are being utilized by non-state actors and insurgent groups to target vital infrastructure, military installations, and civilian populations. The address called for a unified Arab strategy to counter these sophisticated aerial threats.
A Call for Regional Defense Coordination
The Sudanese envoy stressed that the nature of modern warfare has shifted, requiring a more technologically advanced and coordinated response from member states. "The repeated drone incursions we are witnessing across various Arab territories are clear violations of sovereignty," the envoy stated. "We must enhance our electronic warfare capabilities and intelligence sharing to neutralize these threats before they strike."
The speech specifically pointed to the devastating impact of drone strikes on Sudan's stability, noting that such technology has been used to disrupt humanitarian corridors and essential services.
Strengthening Legal and Military Frameworks
Beyond military defense, the envoy urged the Arab League to push for stricter international regulations on the export and transfer of drone components. The Sudanese mission proposed the creation of a regional task force dedicated to monitoring drone activity and developing joint air defense protocols.
Observers at the Arab League noted that this address reflects a growing consensus among member nations that traditional border security is insufficient against the "invisible" threat of low-flying, high-precision drones. The session concluded with a recommendation to include drone defense as a priority item on the agenda for the upcoming Arab Summit.
