Sudan's Civil Defense Organization announced on Thursday that at least 10 people were killed, and more than 3000 houses were damaged by flooding triggered by torrential rains across the country this week.

It added that about 1,800 houses were completely destroyed while just over 1,500 were partially ruined.

Moreover, twenty-one schools and eight mosques were swept away.

"It is worth mentioning that more than 50,000 people have been affected by flooding across Sudan over the past week," the United Nations said Wednesday.

Torrential rains often hit Sudan between June and October, resulting in heavy flooding. Last week's downpours burst a dam in Blue Nile state, destroying more than 600 houses.

"Last year, we had over 400,000 people affected during the whole season," said Saviano Abreu, the OCHA spokesman in Sudan.
