More than 17 million children in Sudan have been denied access to education due to the ongoing civil war, according to Sudan’s National Council for Child Welfare.

Dr Abdel Qader Abu, the council’s secretary-general, stated on Sunday via the Sudan News Agency that the war has halted the education system for over two years across all states. He blamed the disruption on violations by what he described as rebel militias, referring to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The devastating impact of the war has been compounded by a sharp rise in the cost of living, which has worsened malnutrition among children. Dr Abu stressed that immediate protection is needed, alongside guaranteed access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and basic needs.

He revealed that the council is currently developing a comprehensive strategic roadmap aimed at restoring hope for Sudanese children. This includes forging effective partnerships to deliver crucial services and ensure a safe, supportive environment for their daily lives.

The council recently held a meeting to review its plans and proposed projects. Discussions also included evaluating the performance of its regional offices and reviewing the outcomes of past initiatives in preparation for the next phase.

The war in Sudan began on 15 April 2023 between forces loyal to military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (commonly known as Hemedti). Fighting has spread across the country, severely impacting public services, healthcare, and living conditions, while intensifying internal and cross-border displacement.
