The Embassy of India in Cairo organised the Tourism Promotion Event in Cairo, on Wednesday 16 August 2023, to bring Egyptian tourists to India, with the participation of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, Egyptian tourism offices and other tourism agencies of Egypt Ambassador of India to Egypt, Mr. Ajit Gupte said that we are striving to increase the tourism opportunities as clearly shown at the event.

The Ambassador stressed the importance of fostering tourism ties between India and Egypt.

Historical Bond between India and Egypt

India and Egypt, two of the oldest civilizations, have been engaging in socio-economic and political exchanges since ancient times. The recent years have witnessed a further strengthening of these ties with various high-level visits from India. 2022 marked several key events, including visits by India's Raksha Mantri in September, External Affairs Minister in October, and the Minister of Environment in November for COP 27.

2023 heralded a milestone when President Sisi attended India's Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest, reciprocated later by the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Egypt in June.

Tourism: The Bridge Between Civilizations

The Ambassador emphasized that while official visits are crucial, it's the people-to-people connection that truly strengthens bilateral relationships. Both Indians and Egyptians have iconic landmarks that resonate with each other - India has the Taj Mahal, while Egypt boasts the Great Pyramids.

However, the current volume of tourists between the two nations is far from the potential they hold. Both countries are home to a myriad of attractions that remain unexplored by each other’s citizens. Egypt's gems like Luxor, Aswan, Sharm el-Sheikh, Alexandria, Hurghada, Dahab, Faiyum, and Port Said were highlighted by the Ambassador as must-visit destinations.

India's Vast Tourism Potential

India, often termed as the land of 'unity in diversity,' offers a plethora of tourist experiences. From the snow-capped Himalayas to the deserts of Rajasthan and the white salt lands in Gujarat. The country's rich history is evident in its ancient forts and bustling marketplaces like Chandni Chowk in Delhi, which mirrors the vibrancy of Old Cairo. Bollywood, with its center in Mumbai, has a significant fan base in Egypt, with superstars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan being household names.

India's extensive coastline offers stunning views in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while island territories like Lakshadweep and Andaman promise a unique marine experience. Wildlife enthusiasts have options like Kaziranga National Park, Gir National Park, Jim Corbett, and UNESCO sites like Sunderbans.

India's booming medical tourism industry, currently valued at USD 5-6 billion, also invites many foreigners seeking quality healthcare at affordable prices.

The Road Ahead

Connectivity is the backbone of tourism, and the Ambassador lauded the establishment of direct flights between New Delhi and Cairo, along with the Cairo-Mumbai route.

The event concluded with the Ambassador expressing optimism about the future of tourism ties between India and Egypt, hoping that the bond shared over millennia will only deepen further.
