The U.S. National Hurricane Center announced that Tropical Storm Melissa, currently passing through the Caribbean region, has intensified into a hurricane and is expected to continue strengthening over the weekend.
The center posted on X, as reported by Radio France Internationale that Melissa has turned into a hurricane with sustained winds reaching 120 km/h, warning that the storm is expected to intensify rapidly and become a major hurricane today, Sunday.
The center reported that the eye of Hurricane Melissa was located approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 455 kilometers southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Maximum sustained winds of the hurricane reached 185 kilometers per hour, moving west at a speed of 6 kilometers per hour, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
