NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg affirmed that Ukraine has to become a sovereign state and win its war against Russia first in order to join NATO.
During a press conference in Brussels on Monday, Stoltenberg noted that Ukraine's membership in the alliance remains unchanged, adding that the main focus now is to ensure that Ukraine wins as a sovereign independent state in Europe.
He stated that the whole issue of membership will not matter if Ukraine remains an independent state.
Therefore, NATO allies and partners are providing Ukraine with unprecedented military support, referring to the Ukraine-NATO Commission scheduled for Tuesday at the level of foreign ministers.
The official highlighted that they will touch upon how to develop political relations with Ukraine, bringing the latter closer to NATO.
In the same vein, the secretary general emphasized that it is important for NATO to demonstrate that the doors of the alliance remain open, adding that tomorrow Finland will become a full member.
Meanwhile, the process of joining the alliance by Sweden is at the final stage.
