The UNESCO announced the recovery of the historic Gold Helmet of Coțofenești, a key cultural treasure stolen in 2025 from the Drents Museum. Authorities in the Netherlands also recovered two of three missing Dacian gold bracelets linked to the theft.
The artifacts had been featured since September 2025 in UNESCO’s Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects, an online initiative designed to raise awareness about illicit trafficking in cultural heritage. UNESCO said the return of the helmet to Romania marks the first successful recovery associated with the virtual collection, whose long-term goal is to become empty as stolen items are restored to their rightful owners.
Officials said the search for the third bracelet remains ongoing, calling the recovery an important step in international cooperation against cultural property crime.
