The head of Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council (STC) has issued direct instructions to suspend all air traffic at Aden International Airport, according to Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber.
Speaking to Reuters, Al Jaber said the decision led to the prevention of a Saudi delegation’s aircraft from landing in Aden on January 1.
No immediate details were provided regarding the duration of the closure or the reasons behind the directive. The development comes amid ongoing political and security tensions in southern Yemen, where the STC holds significant influence.
The head of Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council (STC) has issued direct instructions to suspend all air traffic at Aden International Airport, according to Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber.
The Southern Transitional Council (STC) was formed in 2017 and advocates for the re-establishment of an independent state in southern Yemen. It is backed by the United Arab Emirates and holds significant political and military influence in Aden and other southern governorates.
Aden, Yemen’s interim capital, has frequently been affected by power struggles between the internationally recognized government and the STC, despite a power-sharing agreement brokered by Saudi Arabia. Aden International Airport is a key strategic facility, serving as a vital gateway for diplomatic missions, humanitarian aid, and commercial flights.
Disruptions at the airport often reflect broader political tensions and have previously raised concerns over security, governance, and the implementation of peace agreements in the country.
