The US state of Georgia is facing an unprecedented crisis as massive wildfires continue to spread, prompting Governor Brian Kemp to declare a state of emergency in 91 counties.

According to Bloomberg, local authorities describe the fires as the most destructive in the state’s history in terms of property damage.

So far, more than 120 homes and buildings have been destroyed, and evacuation orders have been issued for thousands of residents. Efforts are currently focused on containing two major fires, including the Highway 82 blaze in Brantley County, which has destroyed around 87 homes.

Preliminary investigations suggest that this fire may have started after a party balloon came into contact with a power line.

Another major fire, the Pineland Road blaze affecting Clinch and Echols counties, has destroyed about 35 homes. Investigators believe it may have been sparked by welding activity.

The fires have burned nearly 40,000 acres, making containment efforts extremely challenging for firefighting teams.

Experts and meteorologists point to a combination of severe environmental conditions that created ideal circumstances for the rapid spread of the fires. These include intense drought across the southeastern United States, described as the worst spring drought in a decade, which has left vegetation dangerously dry.

Additionally, debris left behind by Hurricane Helene, including large amounts of dead trees, has acted as highly flammable fuel, accelerating the spread and intensity of the fires.

Strong winds and low humidity have further fueled the flames and complicated containment efforts.

Following the emergency declaration, authorities have imposed a complete ban on outdoor burning in affected areas. Fire crews continue working on the ground to establish containment lines and protect threatened communities, while residents are urged to follow official safety instructions.
