The United States Department of State has appointed Brendan Hanrahan as the new senior bureau official for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (EUR), according to an announcement published Friday on the department’s website.

Hanrahan, a former business consultant and policy adviser to Senator Marco Rubio on the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, succeeds career diplomat Louis Bono, who had held the position since President Donald Trump assumed office.

Before his appointment, Hanrahan worked as an investor in a private American firm. His biography does not indicate prior experience in foreign policy; however, internal communications cited by Reuters highlight his private sector background and legislative experience as valuable assets for advancing U.S. objectives in Europe.

"Brendan brings valuable experience from the private sector and the Senate, where he served on the secretary's staff, making him well poised to lead the bureau through the reorganization and to successfully advance the Secretary's agenda throughout Europe and beyond," Bono said in an internal email.

Hanrahan’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to reshape U.S. relations with European allies.

Washington continues to pressure NATO members to increase defense spending, while simultaneously pursuing strategic initiatives in the Arctic and maintaining a firm stance on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The appointment aligns with the broader "America First" restructuring of the State Department. Earlier this week, Senator Rubio announced plans to cut the department’s workforce by 15% and close over 100 bureaus and offices globally.
