Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, has resigned from his position, according to reports by local television channel "Sirasa TV" on Monday.
His resignation comes just a day after Anura Kumara Dissanayake was declared the winner of the recent presidential election, held on Saturday, defeating the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Dissanayake’s victory marks a significant political shift, as he secured the presidency with 42.3% of the vote, according to data released by the Election Commission.
The election results reflect a rejection of the old political guard, which many citizens blame for the severe economic crisis that has plagued the South Asian nation.
Dissanayake, a Marxist candidate, campaigned on promises of reform and a break from the traditional political elites that had been widely criticized for leading Sri Lanka into economic ruin.
