Sri Lanka's parliament speaker announced today, Monday, that the assembly will meet on July 15, and a new president will be elected on the 20th of the same month, according to a statement carried by "Reuters".
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is due to announce his resignation on Wednesday amid a severe economic crisis. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister's Office said earlier today that the entire government will resign once an agreement is reached to form an all-party government, as part of the authorities' efforts to resolve a political crisis caused by a deep economic crisis.
The demonstrators and opposition political parties are also demanding the resignation of the prime minister, and have threatened to call a general strike by next Thursday if the president and prime minister do not resign before that time.
