Sri Lankan authorities have detained former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in connection with allegations of misusing public funds, according to reports by local broadcaster Ada Derana on Friday.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Colombo took the 76-year-old former leader into custody to record a statement regarding his visit to London to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony.
Police officials have not yet confirmed the arrest, and Wickremesinghe’s office has not responded to requests for comment. Local media reported that he is expected to appear before a court later today.
Wickremesinghe, a lawyer by profession, has held the position of Prime Minister six times and assumed the presidency in 2022 during one of Sri Lanka’s most severe financial crises.
