Telegraph reported on Sunday that the spread of new Covid-19 strain could lead to the postponement of more Premier League games.
The British newspaper also added that Premier League matches and other elite spot could face postponement once again because of the spread of coronavirus.
"Top-level sport was told to expect a surge in Covid-19 cases from the “70 per cent” more contagious variant of Covid-19, which on Saturday saw London and the South-East plunged into a new tier of restrictions and ruined the festive plans of millions of Britons," Telegraph reported.
This month witnessed a large number of positive tests among the players. which led to the delaying of games of being called off, including Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Aston Villa.
“There are likely to be” increases in the numbers of postponements within the Premier League and other top-level sport – fueled partly by people fleeing London after it became the first major city placed in Tier 4," Dr John Ashton, former Director of Public Health for North-West England told Telegraph Sport
“If you watched the clips overnight on social media of the crowds at the stations leaving London, I mean this is Chris Rea taking the virus home for Christmas,” he added, in a barbed reference to the singer’s iconic song, 'Driving Home for Christmas."
