Spotify has introduced a new AI-driven feature for audiobooks called Recaps, designed to remind users of key events from books they have previously listened to without requiring a full replay.
The feature aims to enhance the user experience by allowing listeners to quickly catch up on previously heard content, similar to the “Previously on” segments commonly used in television series. Recaps provide concise summaries of the audiobook so far, helping users stay on track without losing important details.
Currently, Recaps is automatically available on the iOS app for a limited number of English-language audiobooks, with plans to expand to more titles in the future, according to The Verge.
To activate the feature, users must have listened to an audiobook for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Summaries are then updated regularly as the listener progresses, offering a seamless way to follow the story.
Spotify has emphasized that Recaps uses artificial intelligence to generate summaries while leaving the original audiobook content and narration unchanged, ensuring all rights remain protected. The feature does not train large language models on audiobook content, nor does it reproduce or replace the original narration.
In February, Spotify partnered with AI company ElevenLabs to deliver more AI-narrated audiobooks on its platform. Despite this, the company has faced criticism for slow responses to AI-related errors in some content, a challenge it is actively addressing to improve the listener experience.
Recaps is part of Spotify’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the digital audiobook market, leveraging artificial intelligence to provide a smarter and more flexible listening experience.
The feature is expected to help users complete audiobooks they start by offering quick, easy-to-digest summaries.
