According to a Spanish government bulletin released on Saturday, British travellers will be permitted to Spain only if they can produce proof of a COVID-19 vaccination starting next month, as the country tightens travel restrictions in response to concerns about the new Omicron coronavirus type.

Until now, Britons could only enter Spain if they could demonstrate proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test result obtained up to 72 hours prior to arrival.

According to the statement in the Bulletin of State, "the development of novel strains causing (coronavirus) necessitates an increase in restrictions" for people from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

The new rule will take effect on Wednesday, December 1st.

"This will effect British residents but not British inpiduals living in Spain," said a spokesman for Spain's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

Around 300,000 Britons live in Spain, making it the largest community of British residents in Europe outside of the United Kingdom.

Following similar steps by other European governments, Spain imposed restrictions on flights from South Africa and Botswana on Friday.
