Health authorities in Spain have confirmed a new case of hantavirus linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius, as officials continue monitoring passengers exposed during the outbreak.
The infected passenger was transferred to a high-isolation unit at Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid, where strict biosecurity measures are in place.
Spanish health officials said the patient was identified through contact tracing after earlier infections were detected aboard the Dutch-flagged vessel. Fourteen Spanish passengers and crew members have been under quarantine in Madrid since May 10.
The new infection raises the number of confirmed Spanish cases to two.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the outbreak aboard the ship has resulted in 12 hantavirus cases, including 10 confirmed infections, two probable cases, and three deaths.
The vessel is currently docked in Rotterdam for disinfection procedures, while health authorities warned additional cases could emerge due to the virus’s long incubation period.
