The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially summoned the Iranian Ambassador to Madrid to voice its "strongest protest" against the violent repression of popular protests currently sweeping across Iran.
According to diplomatic sources cited by Spanish media and reported by Youm7, the Spanish government expressed its deep concern over the excessive use of force by Iranian security services against peaceful demonstrators. The summons follows a weekend of escalating violence in Iran, which has drawn widespread international condemnation.
Upholding Human Rights and Civil Liberties During the meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters in Madrid, Spanish officials demanded that Tehran immediately halt the use of lethal force and respect the fundamental rights of its citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
"Spain considers the current levels of violence unacceptable and calls for the protection of all Iranian citizens exercising their civil rights," a spokesperson for the Ministry stated. Madrid also urged the Iranian authorities to conduct transparent investigations into the reported deaths and injuries of protesters.
Coordinated European Response The decision to summon the ambassador is part of a broader, coordinated effort by European Union member states to pressure Tehran over its human rights record. Spain has indicated it is working closely with its EU partners to evaluate potential diplomatic measures if the situation in Iran continues to deteriorate.
The move underscores Spain's commitment to prioritizing human rights in its foreign policy, even as regional tensions in the Middle East remain high.
