Begona Gomez, the wife of Pedro Sanchez, has been formally charged with multiple corruption-related offenses following a lengthy judicial investigation, according to a ruling issued Monday.

The decision was handed down by Juan Carlos Peinado, who has led the inquiry since April 2024. The court stated that sufficient evidence exists to proceed with charges, including embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings, and misappropriation of public funds.

The case centers on allegations tied to Gomez’s role in establishing and managing an academic chair at Complutense University of Madrid, which she co-directed. Investigators claim the initiative was used to advance private interests through the use of public resources and institutional connections.

In the ruling, the judge noted that the academic program appeared to serve as a platform for personal professional gain. A final decision on whether Gomez will stand trial remains pending.

Prime Minister Sanchez has strongly denied all allegations against his wife, dismissing the case as a politically motivated attempt to undermine his government. The investigation was initially triggered by a complaint from an anti-corruption group with links to far-right circles.

The charges come amid broader scrutiny of figures close to the prime minister. His brother, David Sanchez, has been indicted in a separate influence-peddling case, while former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos is currently on trial over alleged kickbacks related to public contracts.

Opposition parties have intensified calls for Sanchez to resign, as corruption allegations continue to weigh on his administration and the ruling Socialist Party.
