Spain has ordered advertising platforms to remove listings that promote tourist accommodation in Palestinian territories occupied by Israel, in a move that reflects the left-leaning government’s support for Palestinian rights.
According to the Agence France-Presse, Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs said on Tuesday that it had identified 138 advertisements for tourist accommodation across seven platforms operating in Spain. The ministry said the listings promoted rentals located in territories internationally recognized as occupied.
In a statement, the ministry said it had issued an initial warning to the multinational companies involved, informing them that illegal content had been found on their platforms. The companies were instructed to remove or block the advertisements immediately. The ministry warned that failure to comply could lead to further legal or administrative action.
The decision forms part of a broader policy framework adopted by the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. A decree approved by Spain’s parliament in October commits the government to measures aimed at ending the war in Gaza and supporting the Palestinian people.
As part of this policy, Spain has already banned the purchase and sale of weapons with Israel and prohibited advertising that promotes products made in Israeli settlements or in occupied territories.
Commenting on the latest decision, the ministry said that such tourist accommodation listings contribute to the normalization of what it described as a colonial system regarded as illegal under international law, and help to prolong its existence.
