Spain has decided to increase its aid to the Palestinians by an additional €100 million, with the European nation having provided €900 million over the past three decades through various cooperation programs.

The Spanish publication "Libre Mercado" highlighted that Spain's cooperation with Palestine began in 1994 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding concerning Spanish-Palestinian cooperation, accompanied by continuous financial support from government administrations.

Between 1994 and 2018, Spanish funding exceeded €777 million, particularly during the period from 2008 to 2010, during the tenure of former President Rodríguez Zapatero, when Spain became the top European donor and third in terms of the absolute value of aid to Palestine (referring to East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza).

The economic crisis that Spain experienced during those years led to a significant reduction in aid, to the extent that by 2013, it represented one-sixth of the recorded volume in 2010.

Nevertheless, public funding has been steadily increasing since then.

As part of the new 2020-2024 Mediterranean Action Plan prepared by the government of Pedro Sánchez, an additional €100 million has been allocated to aid Palestine.

A key novelty in this case is that Spanish cooperation will primarily be directed toward Palestinians achieving some of the goals of the renowned Sustainable Development Plan for 2030.
