Spain defended its economic and security policies after Donald Trump threatened to cut trade relations following Madrid’s refusal to allow its territory to be used for strikes against Iran.
In a statement, the Spanish government said it remains a committed member of NATO, contributing significantly to European defense, while also serving as a major exporting power within the European Union.
Madrid described the United States as a historic and mutually beneficial trading partner but stressed that any review of bilateral ties must respect private enterprise, international law and EU-U.S. agreements.
The government said Spain has the resources to mitigate potential economic fallout, support affected sectors and diversify supply chains, reaffirming its commitment to free trade and international cooperation based on mutual respect and legal norms.
